Overview

Gyeonggi Library—the largest locally built public library in Korea—redefines the library as a cultural platform for future knowledge sharing. Drawing from the Greek bibliothêkê (“a place for scrolls”), its design transforms the scroll’s continuous narrative into a helical spatial flow anchored by the central “Well of Wisdom,” which integrates movement, browsing, and interaction. A precise BIM workflow enabled the spiral form and irregular double-skin façade, which balances transparency and reflection to enhance daylight and energy performance. Combined with natural ventilation, geothermal systems, and photovoltaics, the library earned Korea’s highest Green Building and 1++ Energy Efficiency ratings. The result is an open civic living room—a sustainable, knowledge-driven space connecting people, nature, and the city.
